The women held their Christmas Break-up Dinner where yearly competition results were announced. Thursdays’ A Grade eclectic was won by Janice McKenzie 68-18 ½-84 ½ -49 ½ and in B Grade Jan Shaw had 75-16-59 nett. Mondays” A grade eclectic was also won by Janice McKenzie with 27 nett, and in B Grade Jeanette Dodds achieved a 31 ½ nett. Thursdays’ putting was won by Janice McKenzie with 85 putts and Mondays’ putting was won by Vicki Hannah with 41. Birdies for the season were won by Vicki Hannah with 10, Gobblers won by Janice McKenzie with 9 and Pars (35-45 handicap), Caroline Wren won with 13. All other results were published at the time of the competition.
Men’s Ambrose competition was won by the team of Richard Stone, Doug Honey and Manuel Quintana with 63-10 2/3 – 52 1/3 and team of 4, Bill Buckley, Don O’Meara, Alan Rowarth and Geoff Vesey were runners-up, scoring 61-8-53. Nearest the pins: A Grade Ian Richardson 1/10 and Geoff Vesey 9/18. In B Grade Bill Buckley 1/10 and Manuel Quintana 9/18.
Men’s 3-man Stableford Classic was won by Jason Newcombe, Darren Gill and Chris Hansen 94 points. Bill Buckley, Geoff Vesey and Ian Richardson were the runners-up with 86 points. Nearest the pin 1 st /10 th in A grade was Don Wagstaff and in B grade Jason Newcombe was successful.
Mixed Closing Day-Gentsomes. This was won by Faith and Dennis Morrissy, Vicki Hannah and Janice McKenzie with 104 points.
Runners-up, with 98 points was the team of Kerryn and Don Wagstaff and Sally and Richard Stone. Nearest the pin st.10 th Men: Jeff McKeon, women: Vicki Hannah and on 9 th /18 th hole, Men: Dennis Morrissy and women: Kerryn Wagstaff.
The women played a nine- hole Ambrose competition dressed in many and varied Halloween costumes for their closing day this year, celebrating with lunch and gift giving afterwards. The winning team of Martha Macintyre, Sami Oguzhan, and Stacey Thomas scored 39-7-32. Runners-up with 41-8-33 were Vicki Hannah, Jan Shaw and Joycie Henderson. The putting trophies, awarded for the least number of putts to a team who hadn’t yet received a trophy was Kerryn Wagstaff, Margaret Smith and Joy Russ with 13 putts.
Men’s Par and Mulligan. The winner in A Grade was John Nankervis with +1, and the runner-up was Bob Bedson who lost on a count-back, also with +1, but nailed the nearest the pin on 1 st /10 th . In B Grade, Bill Buckley won with +6 and Brian McKenzie was runner-up with +2. Visitor Russell Lehmann was nearest the pin in B grade on 1 st /10 th hole.
Final Round of the Men’s Championships. In A Grade Darren Gill won with 74-8-66 and runner-up Richard Stone shot 81-14-67. Colin Coleman achieved nearest the pin on 1 st /10 th hole. In B grade Tony Campbell won with 88-6-62 and runner-up Brian McKenzie scored 89-29-69. Jason Newcombe was nearest the pin on 1 st /10 th hole. The Club Champion is Darren Gill with 225 and runner-up is Don Wagstaff 232. The Laurie Gunn Trophy for best nett aggregate over the championship rounds went to Darren Gill and Don Wagstaff, both with 201. The B Grade Champion is Brian McKenzie with 269 and Runner-up Ray Matthews scored 275. The Veteran’s Champion (60+) was won by Tony Campbell who also won the monthly medal. Medal of Medallists was won by Darren Gill with 66 nett.
Women’s teams playing match play for either the Captain or the President resulted in a win for the President’s team 5/0. On Monday 26 th November Apollo Bay women players were again successful, this time playing at Beeac. Jan Shaw, Vicki Hannah and Sandra Toone brought home the Joyce Simpkin Bowl. We are very proud of the members of our small club who travel to districts events and we congratulate them on their success.
On Monday 19 th November Apollo Bay player Stacey Thomas claimed the prestigious Rene Austin Brooch in Colac after scoring 89-18-71 to win. Congratulations Stacey! More exciting news from our small but passionate club – four of the women from Apollo Bay Golf Club who played at “The Sands” in Torquay on Friday 23 rd November in the South Western District Championships were successful. Faith Morrissy won the C grade Championship with 35 points, and Caroline Wren was runner-up with 32 points. Jill Fowler won B Grade South Western District Championship and Debbie Biggs won the best nett score in B Grade. Well done everyone!
Men’s stroke 4-weeker Championship. Apologies to Graham McKenzie, who won last week (not his son Craig). The winner this week in A Grade was Bernie Coller with 68 nett and runner-up, John Nankervis, on a count-back from Colin Coleman, scored 70 nett. Nearest the pins, second shot on the 7 th and 8 th holes was Richard Stone and on the 6 th hole it was Bernie Coller. In B Grade Bill Buckley won with 69 nett and Peter Forbes, on a count-back from Manuel Quintana had 71 nett. Bill Buckley and Peter Forbes were the most accurate with their second shots on the 7 th and 6 th holes respectively. The champion of the four-weeker competition, where only the winners of the season’s 4-week competitions were eligible to play in the “Don Wagstaff Cup” was Bernie Coller and the runner-up in this competition was Don O’Meara.
